All subjects/Specialist Mathematics

Year 11 & 12

Specialist Maths is hard. The right tutor makes it manageable.

Specialist Maths separates students who have truly mastered mathematical thinking from those who are just getting by. Our tutors have done the subject themselves, scored well, and know exactly where students get stuck. Sessions focus on building the kind of deep understanding that shows up in exams, not just surface-level practice.

What the curriculum covers

Specialist Mathematics is assessed across four units over Years 11 and 12. Every tutoring session at Pythora is aligned directly to this syllabus.

01

Unit 1: Combinatorics, vectors and proof

Combinatorics and counting principles
Vectors in the plane
Introduction to proof
Circle geometry
02

Unit 2: Complex numbers, trigonometry, functions and matrices

Complex numbers
Trigonometric functions
Matrices and linear transformations
Real and complex polynomials
03

Unit 3: Mathematical induction, vectors, matrices and complex numbers

Proof by mathematical induction
Vectors in three dimensions
Vector calculus
Further complex numbers and De Moivre's theorem
04

Unit 4: Further calculus and statistical inference

Integration techniques (by parts, partial fractions)
Differential equations
Modelling with differential equations
Statistical inference and hypothesis testing

Where students get stuck

Common struggles in Specialist Maths

01

Complex number arithmetic and polar/exponential form

02

Setting up and solving differential equations

03

Writing formal proofs (induction and circle geometry)

04

Vector calculus and distinguishing position, velocity and acceleration

Exam and assessment tips

Show all working — method marks are awarded even if the final answer is wrong

For PSMTs, link every mathematical result back to the real-world context

Memorise De Moivre's theorem and Euler's formula — they appear in multiple question types

In statistical inference, state hypotheses, test statistic, p-value and conclusion formally

What students gain

What to expect from tutoring

Confidence going into any exam question

Clear working that earns method marks

Real understanding instead of memorised steps

Our approach

How we tutor Specialist Maths

Built around the QCAA syllabus

Every session maps directly to the Specialist Mathematics syllabus. Nothing taught is irrelevant to what your child is being assessed on.

Understanding over memorising

Our tutors focus on genuine comprehension first. Students who understand the content perform better than students who have only memorised it.

Tutors who recently did it themselves

Every Specialist Maths tutor at Pythora achieved strong results in this exact subject. They know the QCAA curriculum from the inside.
