Essential English
tutoring.

Essential English is the practical version of senior English. The texts are different, the assessments are different, but the writing still needs to be sharp. Our tutors help students read closely, write clearly and walk into every assessment knowing what is expected.

Examples we work through

WHAT A SESSION LOOKS LIKE

Four snapshots of the kind of questions we drill, and the bit students usually miss until someone walks them through it.

Analytical essay

Analyse how the author of a chosen text uses structure to shape the reader's response to a central idea.

How we coach it

We teach the difference between identifying a technique and *analysing the effect*. Most drafts stop at the first; the marks are in the second.

Persuasive writing

Write a persuasive letter to a local council opposing a planned change. Use at least three rhetorical devices.

How we coach it

Tone, audience, structure. We draft together, then revise against the QCAA criteria, what works in voice often loses marks in form.

Comparative · IA2

Compare how two texts handle the theme of belonging across different cultural lenses.

How we coach it

Most students compare *what happens*; the marks are in comparing *how meaning is constructed*. We make the move from plot to craft explicit.

Exam timing

Plan, write and edit a 600-word analytical response in 70 minutes from an unseen prompt.

How we coach it

Drilling the clock. We rehearse the 10-min plan, 50-min write, 10-min edit ritual until it becomes second nature.

The Pythora approach

HOW WE LIFT YOUR RESULT

Find the gaps

A quick diagnostic shows exactly which topics are shaky, so no time is wasted.

Build, then stretch

Lock in the fundamentals, then push into the harder modelling and exam questions.

Exam-ready

Past-paper drills and timing practice so the external feels familiar, not scary.
